Medicinal Plants for Flu (Influenza)

Influenza, or the flu, is a serious lung infection caused by the influenza virus. This virus can lead to widespread illness and death worldwide, causing 3-5 million severe cases and up to 500,000 deaths each year. The flu virus changes over time, leading to seasonal outbreaks and occasional pandemics.

The flu virus is a single-strand RNA virus with eight gene segments and two key surface proteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). HA helps the virus attach to and enter cells, while NA helps the virus spread by breaking bonds to release new virus particles from infected cells. Inhibiting these proteins can prevent and treat flu infections.

There are four main antiviral drugs approved by the U.S. FDA: amantadine, rimantadine, oseltamivir, and zanamivir. However, these drugs can have side effects and the flu virus can become resistant to them.

Another approach is using antiviral herbal extracts from medicinal plants. These plants have complex mixtures of ingredients that can fight the flu virus directly or boost the immune system. This method can also reduce the side effects associated with single-ingredient drugs. This review looks at several medicinal plants and their components that show antiviral activity against the flu

Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis Mill.)

Aloe vera, belonging to the Asphodelaceae family,

    is well-known for its medicinal properties. Key chemical components include aloin, emodin, aloe-emodin, barbaloin, isobarbaloin, and chrysophanic acid. These compounds, particularly the anthraquinones, exhibit antiviral properties that can be effective against the human influenza virus. Aloe vera is also rich in vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and amino acids that contribute to its overall therapeutic benefits.
