Introduction
Phoenix dactylifera, commonly known as Khajur or Date Palm, is one of the oldest cultivated fruit trees in the world. It has been grown for thousands of years, especially in desert and semi-arid regions. The sweet fruit, called dates, is highly nutritious and valued both as food and medicine. In Nepal, Khajur is known as “खजुर” and is appreciated for its strength-giving and healing properties. Every part of the plant, including the fruit, leaves, and stem juice, has traditional medicinal importance. Dates are commonly eaten fresh or dried and are considered a natural energy booster.
Khajur is not only popular for its taste but also for its health benefits. It is widely used in traditional systems of medicine such as Ayurveda and Unani. The fruit helps improve weakness, cough, and joint problems, while the juice of leaves and stem helps control bleeding and stomach issues.
Availability in Nepal and Abroad
Khajur grows well in hot and semi-temperate climates. It is mainly cultivated in desert regions and dry areas of the world. Countries like Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, and Algeria are the largest producers of dates. These countries export dates worldwide.
In Nepal, Khajur is found in warm regions like the Terai and some inner Terai areas. Although Nepal does not produce dates in large quantities, the fruit is easily available in markets. Most dates in Nepal are imported in dried form from Middle Eastern countries. Fresh dates are less common but sometimes available.
