Golden Dhupi, known scientifically as Platycladus
orientalis 'Aurea Nana' and referred to in Nepali as कागतीगन्धे सुनौलो धुपी (Kagatigandhe Sunaulo
Dhupi), is a distinctive evergreen conifer celebrated for its vibrant
golden-yellow foliage and compact growth habit. This ornamental plant is not
only valued for its aesthetic appeal but also for its medicinal properties,
making it a significant addition to both gardens and traditional medicine
practices.
Introduction
Golden Dhupi is a dwarf cultivar of the Oriental Arborvitae,
characterized by its bright golden-yellow leaves that maintain their color
throughout the year. Its compact, globular form and slow growth rate make it an
ideal choice for small gardens, rockeries, and container planting. Beyond its
ornamental value, various parts of the plant have been utilized in traditional
medicine systems, particularly in Asia, for their therapeutic benefits.
Availability in Nepal and Other Countries
In Nepal, Golden Dhupi is cultivated in gardens and parks,
especially in regions with temperate climates. Its adaptability to a range of
soil types and resistance to urban pollution contribute to its popularity among
Nepali gardeners. Internationally, this plant is grown in countries across
Asia, Europe, and North America. In China and Korea, it is commonly used in
traditional landscapes and temple gardens. In Western countries, it is favored
for its ornamental qualities and is often featured in botanical gardens and
private landscapes.
Physical Properties
Golden Dhupi is a small, slow-growing evergreen shrub that
typically reaches heights of 2 to 5 feet (60 to 150 cm) and spreads 2 to 4 feet
(60 to 120 cm) wide. Its foliage consists of scale-like leaves arranged in
flattened sprays, exhibiting a bright golden-yellow hue that adds year-round
color to the landscape. The bark is reddish-brown, becoming more textured with
age. The plant produces small, oval cones that start yellow and mature to light
brown, resembling tiny roses when they open.
Medicinal Properties
Various parts of Platycladus orientalis, including
the leaves, have been studied for their medicinal properties. Research
indicates that the plant possesses anti-inflammatory, antioxidant,
antimicrobial, and diuretic activities. These effects are attributed to
compounds such as diterpenoids, flavonoids, and phenolic acids present in the
plant. Traditional uses include treatments for respiratory conditions, skin
ailments, and digestive issues.
Advantages
The advantages of Golden Dhupi extend beyond its medicinal
applications. As an ornamental plant, it enhances garden aesthetics with its
vibrant foliage and compact form. Its adaptability to various soil types and
resistance to pests and diseases make it a low-maintenance choice for
gardeners. Additionally, its ability to withstand urban pollution makes it
suitable for city landscapes.
Uses
Golden Dhupi serves multiple purposes:
- Ornamental
Use: Ideal for rock gardens, border fronts, container plantings, and
as an accent in mixed borders.
- Traditional
Medicine: Utilized in herbal remedies for various health conditions,
including respiratory issues and skin problems.
- Aromatherapy:
The essential oils derived from the plant are used in aromatherapy to
promote relaxation and mental clarity.
Using Methods
In traditional medicine, the leaves of Golden Dhupi are
often dried and used to prepare herbal teas or decoctions. Essential oils
extracted from the leaves can be used in aromatherapy diffusers or applied
topically when diluted. For ornamental purposes, the plant can be pruned to
maintain its shape and size, making it suitable for various landscape designs.
Harvesting and Preservation
The leaves of Golden Dhupi can be harvested throughout the
year, with optimal collection times during summer and fall. After harvesting,
the leaves should be dried in a well-ventilated, shaded area to preserve their
medicinal properties. Once dried, they can be stored in airtight containers
away from direct sunlight and moisture to maintain their efficacy.
Conclusion
Golden Dhupi (Platycladus orientalis 'Aurea Nana') is a versatile plant that offers both aesthetic beauty and medicinal benefits. Its vibrant golden foliage enhances garden landscapes, while its various therapeutic properties contribute to traditional medicine practices. Whether used as an ornamental feature or for its health-promoting qualities, Golden Dhupi remains a valuable addition to diverse settings.
