Introduction:
Chiuri is a deciduous
tree, which grows 20 m high, commonly known as Nepal Butter Tree. Leaves are 14
to 30 cm along and 7-16 cm across crowded at the tips of branches. The upper
surface of the leaf is smooth while the undersurface has a hairy texture.
Flowers are yellow, from November to February, fruits ripen from March to July.
It is found scattered in most parts of Nepal between 300 and 1,500 meters.
Harvesting Time:
Chiuri fruits are normally collected between July and
August. The most important parts of the tree in the trade are its seeds,
fruits, and ghee obtained from the seeds. The seed is swollen centrally and
somewhat tapering towards the ends, light yellowish-brown in color. Once broken,
the white or ghee portion of the seed becomes visible. Ghee is whitish-yellow
in color and has many uses.
Usages and Benefits:
Chiuri has been used to a wide range of purposes, from
medicinal to utilitarian. Fruits, leaves, seeds, and bark all have an important
role in the following different traditional practices and products:
Chiuri Ghee: Among the most well-known products from Chiuri,
ghee plays a great role in local cuisine and skincare. Chiuri ghee acts as a
natural moisturizer, helping soften skin and protect it from dryness. Moreover,
it is applied to children during traditional massage with the belief that it
promotes the healthy growth of the child.
Soap and Oil: Ghee is also an essential ingredient in the
manufacturing process of soap and oil. Soaps produced with chiuri are soft and
skin-friendly, and hence, are in great demand among the people there.
Candles: The seeds yield candles in the countryside. Such
conventional candle-making practices in an eco-friendly and locally sourced
manner cut down the demand for synthetic raw materials.
Alcohol Production: Chiuri fruits are fermented locally to
produce a traditional alcoholic beverage, very popular in certain areas of
Nepal.
Fishing Poison: The bark of Chiuri trees contains compounds
used as poison in traditional fishing.
Leaf Plates (Doona Tapari): Large leaves of Chiuri are used
to make plates and bowls, known as "Doona Tapari." These plates are
biodegradable and find huge application in Nepal, especially during festivals
and other gatherings when serving food items.
Health Benefits:
It has several medicinal benefits due to the high content of
fatty acids and other nutrients. Ghee is prepared from Chiuri seeds, which are
anti-inflammatory in nature and is used in Ayurveda to treat different skin-related
ailments. Ghee assists in wound healing, and can even be applied for soothing
burns. Chiuri oil may be applied on dry, cracked skin for making it soft and
supple.
Chiuri ghee has also been thought to help with joint pain.
For sore joints, an application of Chiuri ghee has been said to be applied warm
to soothe arthritis and stiff muscles. Some feel that small amounts internally
consumed help with digestion and overall health.
Conservation and Commercial Importance:
Chiuri trees contribute much to the local economy,
especially in the villages. The Chiuri products, like ghee, soaps, and oil,
have huge demand both in Nepalese and international markets. Chiuri products
are eco-friendly, such as leaf plates and natural ghee, which is at the global
current trend.
The Chiuri trees contribute to the preservation of the
environment through the maintenance of soil quality, preventing erosion along
hilly areas. The trees thrive well under community forests where villagers can
draw their products without causing harm to the ecosystem. With proper
management, the Chiuri trees can be sustained for continued benefit to the
people and the environment.
Chiuri, commonly known as the Nepal Butter Tree, is one of
the most striking herbs found in Nepal, with a very potential role it could
play in the sphere of economy, environment, and health. From its versatile ghee
to its eco-friendly leaf plates, Chiuri stands for how nature can provide
