      Introduction

Kurilo—also known as Shatavari, Shatamuli, Nye Shing (in some regions of Assam), and scientifically as Asparagus racemosus—is one of the most highly valued medicinal herbs found in Nepal and other South Asian countries. This herb is often referred to as “divine medicine” and “nectar root” because of its wide range of healing properties. It has been used for centuries in traditional Ayurvedic medicine to treat various physical and mental health conditions. Some even call it “The Queen of Herbs” due to its particularly strong benefits for women’s health.

Kurilo is not just a remedy—it’s a natural gift that heals, nourishes, and revitalizes the human body. And the best part? It grows wild in Nepal’s hilly and mountainous regions, silently offering its blessings to those who recognize its value.

Availability in Nepal and Other Countries

In Nepal, Kurilo grows naturally at elevations up to 2,100 meters. You can find it in forests, hillsides, and grasslands across various districts. It doesn’t need heavy maintenance, which makes it ideal for cultivation in rural and mid-hill areas. Many local farmers in Nepal have started growing Kurilo commercially as an alternative to traditional crops. It's even used to produce herbal milk substitutes!

Outside Nepal, Kurilo is also found in India, especially in the Himalayan regions and parts of South India. It grows in Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and parts of Southeast Asia as well. With the rise of natural and organic medicine, this humble root is now being studied and promoted in Western countries too, especially in the field of women's health supplements.

      Physical Properties

Kurilo is a shrubby climbing plant that grows up to 3 to 5 feet tall. It has:

      • Sharp spines along the stem
      • Very fine, needle-like leaves
      • Small white flowers that bloom in bunches
      • Its roots are thick, long, and full of white milky sap

The root is the most valuable part of the plant. It has a soft, fibrous texture when fresh and turns dry, brittle, and light brown when processed.

      Medicinal Properties

Shatavari or Kurilo is one of those herbs that checks all the boxes—nutritious, calming, energizing, and healing. According to ancient Ayurvedic texts, it has the following medicinal properties:

      • Cooling in nature (perfect for balancing internal heat)
      • Agnideepak – improves digestion
      • Paushtik – highly nutritious and strengthens the body
      • Buddhivardhak – enhances memory and brain function
      • Kamoddeepak – natural aphrodisiac
      • Balakarak – promotes energy and stamina
      • Raktapitta Nashak – helpful in blood disorders
      • Galactagogue – increases breast milk in nursing mothers

In short, Kurilo doesn’t just heal diseases—it helps build up the body’s natural strength and defenses.

      Advantages of Kurilo

Kurilo is so full of benefits that calling it just a herb feels like an understatement. Here are a few key advantages:

      • Boosts immunity: Its antioxidant properties strengthen the body’s defense system.
      • Supports reproductive health: Especially useful for women facing hormonal issues, irregular periods, or low breast milk.
      • Improves digestion: Cures constipation, acidity, and even irritable bowel conditions.
      • Balances hormones: Ideal for both men and women to maintain hormonal health.
      • Liver health: Fresh juice is excellent for treating jaundice and other liver problems.
      • Mental well-being: Used in treating anxiety, depression, and even memory loss.
      • Controls blood sugar and pressure: Helpful for diabetic and hypertensive patients.
      • Improves sexual health: Strengthens reproductive organs and is effective against premature ejaculation and low sperm count.

      Traditional and Modern Uses

People in Nepal and other countries use Kurilo in various ways. Here are some popular traditional and modern applications:

      As a Food Ingredient

      • Used as vegetable (especially tender shoots)
      • Added to soups and daal (lentil dishes) for added nutrition
      • Made into pickles or side dishes

      As Medicine

      • Root powder: Taken with warm water or milk for internal healing
      • Juice (swaras): Taken 5–7 times a day to treat jaundice and blood disorders
      • Herbal supplements: Capsules and tablets made from powdered root
      • Tonic for women: Taken post-pregnancy to purify the uterus and increase lactation

      How to Use Kurilo

      Preparing the Root

      1. Harvesting time: Best collected in Kartik to Mangsir (October to December)
      2. Select thick roots, avoiding thin or damaged ones
      3. Boil or steam for 3–5 minutes to soften the outer skin
      4. Remove the bark and dry the white core in the sun
      5. Once fully dried, grind into powder and store in airtight containers

      Dosage and Methods

      • Powder (Churna): ½ to 1 teaspoon, 5–7 times a day with warm water
      • Juice (Swaras): About 1.5 liters daily, in divided doses
      • Raw chewable pieces: Can be sucked or chewed for digestive and sexual benefits

      Harvesting and Preservation

Kurilo roots should be dug carefully to avoid damaging the finer roots. After removing the bark and drying the white root, it should be:

      • Stored in cloth bags or airtight jars
      • Kept in a cool, dry place
      • Checked regularly for moisture or fungal growth

Properly preserved Kurilo can last for up to a year without losing its potency.

      Conclusion

In a world rushing toward synthetic medicines and high-tech health solutions, Kurilo stands out as a humble yet powerful natural remedy. It’s affordable, locally available, and most importantly, it works. Whether you want to improve your digestive health, strengthen your reproductive system, or just build better immunity, this root offers a gentle, holistic path to wellness.

Rishi Charak, one of Ayurveda’s greatest sages, considered Shatavari not just a medicinal herb but a life-enhancing elixir. That still holds true today.

So, if you're lucky enough to have access to this miracle plant, don’t ignore it. Learn how to grow it, harvest it, and use it—not just for yourself, but for your family, your community, and even your livestock. As someone once said, planting Kurilo is not just good for your body—it’s an act of wisdom.
