यो लेकाली गाउँहरूमा जेठ - साउनमा कोदो रोपी मङ्सिर - पुसमा ५-६ महिनामा पाक्छ । सयौँ किसिमका कोदो २-३ फिट अग्लो, डाँठ र फूल सेतो, दुवैतर्फ गएका पातहरू हुन्छन् । पशुहरूका लागि राम्रो घाँस र मानिसका लागि सर्वोत्तम अमृत अन्न मानिन्छ । एक-डेढ महिना व्याड्मा बीज छरि बेर्ना तयार गरी खनेर कोदो रोपिन्छ । मकैबारी भटमासमा कोदालीले खनिन्छ भने बाँझो जमिनमा जोतेर भार केलाई कोदोको रोपाइँ गरिन्छ । गर्मी- तराई मधेशमा लेकतिर छर्ने पनि गर्दछन् । पहाडका बेंसी गर्मी ठाउँका कोदो ठस्को र फस्को केही नमिठो हुन्छ भने लेकतिरको धेरै मीठो, तागतिलो पौष्टिक कफ वातनाशक मधुमेहको औषधि मानिन्छ । रातो - कालो कोदो ढिकीमा फलेर जाँतो / घट्ट / मिलमा सेतो पिठो पारी कालो भोजन अति स्वादिष्ठ हुन्छ । कोदो प्रशस्त लौहशक्तिले (Iron power) भरपूर हाड बलियो पार्ने, दुखाइ-दर्दमा उपयोगी, निम्नरक्तचाप - अग्निमन्दमा हितकारी र कम खर्चिलो अन्न भनिन्छ । फलामे भाँडामा पिठो ओडालेर ढिँडोको चोइली खाइएमा दिनभर भोक लाग्दैन । कटुसको पात / केरा पातमा बनाएको कोदोको रोटी १-२ वटाले अघाउँछ । घ्यू / तेलसँग ताइमा पकाएको रोटी गाँउभरि बास्ना दिन्छ । कोदोको खोलेले समस्त बिरामीलाई उठाउँछ। चिसो दम खोकी रोगमा र गर्भवतीले आइरन टेबलेट खानुपर्दैन, हेमोग्लोबिन कमी भएमा कोदोको सेवनले जुरुक्कै उठाइदिन्छ । सधैँ कोदोको भोजनले सबैलाई निरोग बनाउँछ । भरसक रोग लाग्न दिँदैन । मोटाएर पेटमा बोसो लाग्दैन । पुरानो कालो कोदोको पिठोबाट मर्चा / जाँड / रक्सी आफैँ स्थानीय स्रोत र साधनबाट बनाएर खाने चलन छ । कोदोको एक पाने रक्सी पुरानो घ्यू अथवा तोरीको तेलमा मिसाएर मालिस गर्दा समस्त बाथ र दुखेको ठीक पार्छ । कुहाउँदा कुअन्न भन्नेहरू अचेल सबै अन्नमा सर्वश्रेष्ठ अमृत मान्दछन् । कोदो उत्पादन वृद्धिहेतु रोपेको / छरेको ठाउँमा आधा - एक फिट भएपछि पशुलाई एकपटक चराएर धेरै फलाउने गरेका विश्व वैज्ञानिक नेपालका अग्रज किसानहरू छन् ।

परिचय

कोदो एक प्राचीन अन्न बाली हो जसको उत्पत्ति अफ्रिका र एसियामा भएको मानिन्छ। नेपालमा यसको खेती लेकाली गाउँहरूमा बढी गरिन्छ। यो बाली जेठ-साउन महिनामा रोपिएर मङ्सिर-पुषमा पाक्छ। कोदोको खेती गर्न सजिलो छ र यसले अल्प समयमै उत्पादन दिन्छ। यसको बाली निकै पौष्टिक हुन्छ र यसलाई "गरिबको धान" पनि भनिन्छ।

उपलब्धता

कोदो नेपालका विभिन्न क्षेत्रहरूमा पाइन्छ, विशेष गरी पहाडी र हिमाली भेगमा। यसको खेती तराई, मधेश, पहाड र हिमालका केही भागहरूमा पनि गरिन्छ। नेपाल बाहेक यो भारत, चीन, नाइजेरिया, युगाण्डा, इथियोपिया लगायत अफ्रिका र एसियाका अन्य देशहरूमा पनि उत्पादन गरिन्छ।

भौतिक गुणहरू

कोदोको बोट २-३ फिट अग्लो हुन्छ।
यसको डाँठ र फूल सेतो हुन्छ।
पातहरू दुवैतर्फ फैलिएका हुन्छन्।
यसको बीज सानो र गोलाकार हुन्छ, जुन रातो, कालो वा खैरो रंगको हुन सक्छ।
कोदोको बाली धेरै किसिमको हुन्छ, जसमध्ये केही मीठो र केही नमिठो स्वादको हुन्छ।

कोदोमा प्रशस्त मात्रामा आयरन, क्याल्सियम, प्रोटीन, फाइबर र अन्य पौष्टिक तत्वहरू पाइन्छन्।
यो रक्तचाप नियन्त्रण गर्न मद्दत गर्छ।
यसले हाड र दाँतलाई बलियो बनाउँछ।
कोदोले पाचन शक्ति बढाउँछ र कब्जियतलाई नियन्त्रण गर्छ।
यसले मधुमेह रोगीहरूका लागि फाइदाजनक हुन्छ।

उत्पादन र संरक्षण

कोदोको खेती गर्न जमिनलाई राम्रोसँग तयार पार्नुपर्छ।
बीज छरेपछि १-२ महिनामा रोप्न योग्य हुन्छ।
यसलाई मकै र भटमाससँग मिसाएर पनि रोप्न सकिन्छ।
कोदो पाकेपछि काटिएर सुकाइन्छ र भण्डारण गरिन्छ।
यसलाई सुख्खा ठाउँमा राख्नुपर्छ ताकी कीरा वा फफूंदीले नष्ट नगरोस्।

Both are celebrated for their resilience to harsh climates, minimal water needs, and dense nutrient content, making them staples for food security in Nepal and parts of Africa and Asia

Availability in Nepal & Elsewhere

Nepal: Finger millet is the fourth most significant cereal, grown over ~270,000 ha, yielding ~300–340 kt annually
It thrives from Terai plains up to 3,000 m in the Himalayas
Kodo millet is locally cultivated in Jeth–Sawan, ready for harvest in Mangshir–Pus (5–6 months later); it’s planted on ridges (baudma) or dry lands using hoes or bullocks per local farming customs.
Globally, finger millet traces back to East Africa (Ushera) and is now found in India, China, Malaysia, and parts of South America, valued for drought resistance
