Amala, popularly known as Gooseberry or Emblic Myrobolan, is
one of the most highly valued herbs in Nepal because of its wide range of
medicinal and commercial applications. This medium-sized deciduous tree
generally occurs wild between 150 to 1600 meters in elevation throughout Nepal
but is common in hilly, forested areas of the country, which makes it extremely
important in the country's herbal tradition.
Properties and Benefits of Amala:
High Vitamin C Content: Among fruits, Amala has emerged as
one of the best in regard to its Vitamin C content. This in turn renders it a
strong antioxidant that reinforces the immune system and keeps skin healthy.
Vitamin C is highly important for keeping collagen-good a protein to keep skin,
hair, and nails strong and young.
Amala is considered one of the most common herbs, which
plays an important role in digestion under traditional Nepali medicine and
Ayurveda. Because of the sour and bitter taste of this plant, it is efficient
to stimulate digestive enzymes that prevent indigestion, constipation, and
bloating.
It is famously used in Ayurvedic practices to help combat
disorders like anemia and jaundice since it's believed to enhance the
capability of the body in purifying the blood and, hence, helping in liver
functions. This will be very useful for patients suffering from liver-related
diseases.
Urinary and Gut Health: Traditionally, fresh Amala fruits
are taken for urinary issues, while the fruit dried forms are usually put to
use in gastrointestinal problems like diarrhea and dysentery. That shows the
fruit has different applications in the urinary and digestive systems.
Hair and Skin Care: Amala powder is renowned for dandruff
problems in Nepal, as well as in other South Asian countries. Amala will assist
with feeding hair, animate hair development, and decrease balding because of elevated
degrees of cell reinforcements and nutrients present in it. Additionally, the
cancer prevention agent properties of Amala are helpful in healthy skin to
hinder the most common way of maturing and give brilliance to complexion.
Involves in Nepal:
Ayurvedic Medication: A large number of the Ayurvedic plans,
including Chyawanprash and Triphala, contain Amala as one of the vital fixings
and are taken for insusceptibility, restoration, and detoxification.
Gastronomic Purposes: New products of Amala, when eaten, are for the most part
polished off crude, salted, or as juice. Because of its sour taste, it is used
in a variety of Nepalese dishes to give them a refreshing touch.
Food Preservation: Due to the anti-oxidant property, Amala
finds its application in the preservation of food stuffs, mainly in the
conventional methods of food storage.
Commercial Importance:
Amala is one of the most important trade items in Nepal in
its raw as well as processed states. Fruits of Amala are brown to blackish
brown color and are slightly astringent with a bitter taste. Fresh and dried
fruits are exported for pharmacological as well as cosmetic purposes.
Conservation and Cultivation:
The Government of Nepal, fully aware of the increasing
demand and multiple uses of Amala, has stressed the need for planting and
conservation of this herb. This will not only help the local economies but also
ensure that exploitation of Amala by herbal industries is on a sustainable
basis. Today, planting of Amala trees is increasingly being done, more so in
areas where they occur naturally, and are becoming a significant resource in
both rural and commercial sectors.
Harvesting and Trade:
Generally, fruits are harvested between September and
November. Most fruits are picked raw or green, and some are left on the tree to
dry, for medicinal purposes. Fruits are also used both fresh and dried in
trades that involve local and international markets.
Conclusion:
It is one of the main herbs taken from Nepal, containing a number of healing properties and finding major application in Ayurveda and in traditional Nepalese medicine. Its benefits range from digestion problems and hair problems to blood purification-the uses of Amala are hugely incorporated into the day-to-day life of people in Nepal. Conservation will make sure that this versatile herb goes on benefiting generations after generations.
