Indreni,इन्द्रेणी, इन्द्रायण, Trichosanthes tricuspidata :


यो इन्द्रेणी वर्षजीवी र बहुवर्षायु पनि पाइने लता हो । कहीं सुकेर जरामात्र रहन्छ भने कहीँ भयाङ नै सदा पतझर देखिन्छ । सानो, ठूलो र विभिन्न रङमा फूलेको भेटिन्छ । तरबुजाको समान त्रिकोणाकार पात, पाँच चोसा भएको फूल प्रायः पहेँलो पाइन्छ । फल सुन्तलाको समान हरियो र पहेँलो भई पाक्छ, भित्र बीज हुन्छन् । यसको फलको मज्जा कालो रङको अत्यन्त तिक्त एवम् तीव्र विरेचक हुन्छ । १-२ रत्ती खाँदा २-३ घण्टामा पानीझैँ पातलो पखाला लाग्दछ । अधिक मात्रामा खायो भने गर्भघातक र मृत्यु हुन्छ । विषैला मात्रा : ०.६-१ ग्राम र घातक मात्रा ४ ग्राम पर्याप्त हुन्छ । यसको जरा शोथ र विरेचकमा प्रयोग गरिन्छ । सन्धिशोथ, जलोदर, कमलपित्त, आमवात, सुन्निनेमा सुठो धूलो र गुडको साथमा खाँदा सन्चो गर्छ। यसको बीजको तेल कपाल कालो गर्नेमा प्रयोग हुन्छ । विष चिकित्सामा क्वाथ पिउनुपर्छ । वमन भइसकेपछि दूध पिएर आराम लिनुपर्छ । यो ५००-२४०० मिटर उचाइमा पाइन्छ । मात्रा : फलचूर्ण १-२ ग्राम, मूलचूर्ण १-३ मासा । यसको पञ्चाङ्ग खोटो छालाका रोगमा लेपन गर्दा सन्चो गराउँछ ।

Indreni (Trichosanthes tricuspidata)

Features:

•          Plant Type: Perennial creeper.

•          Leaves: Triangular, similar to watermelon leaves.

•          Flowers: Small to large, with five lobes, typically yellow.

•          Fruit: Green and yellow like an orange, ripens with seeds inside.

•          Pulp: Black, very bitter, strong laxative.

Usage:

•          Laxative: The fruit pulp, if consumed in small amounts (1-2 ratti), induces watery diarrhea within 2-3 hours.

•          Toxicity: Toxic dose is 0.6-1 gram; lethal dose is 4 grams. Excessive consumption can lead to miscarriage and death.

•          Anti-inflammatory: The root is used to treat inflammation.

•          Joint Pain and Swelling: Mixed with sweet powder and jaggery, the root can treat joint inflammation, dropsy, lotus bile, gout, and general swelling.

•          Hair Treatment: Seed oil is used to blacken hair.

•          Poison Antidote: A decoction (quath) is used in treating poisoning. Post-vomiting, one should rest and consume milk.

Way of Medication:

•          Fruit Powder: 1-2 grams.

•          Root Powder: 1-3 masa (masa is a traditional unit of weight).

•          Topical Application: The panchang (whole plant) is used to cure skin diseases when applied externally.

Conclusion: Indreni, with its strong laxative properties and anti-inflammatory benefits, requires careful dosage due to its toxicity. Its diverse medicinal uses, from treating skin diseases to blackening hair, highlight its significance in traditional medicine.
