Introduction
Kanike
Keri, or scientifically known as Ligustrum indicum, is a poorly documented but
highly desirable medicinal shrub or small tree from Nepal's mid-hill tracts and
neighboring nations. It is commonly named "केरी" or "कनिके."
It holds a unique place in traditional herbal system of medicine primarily
based on its multi-therapeutic uses. Its flowers, leaves, seeds, and bark are
medicinally significant. By virtue of its delicate ghyu-colored (buttery
yellow) flowers and medicinal uses in jaundice, acidity, hemorrhoids, and
rheumatism, Kanike Keri is still a sure bet among the traditional remedies
found in villages in Nepal.
Kanike
Keri is especially useful in Ayurvedic medicine, where equilibrium of the
constituents of the body (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) is the art of healing the

Availability in Nepal and Other Countries
Kanike
Keri is widely distributed in Nepal's temperate to subalpine zones at an

of eastern, central, and western Nepal. Kanike Keri thrives under cold and
humid conditions and can frequently be seen growing wild along forest edges,
pathways, or open grasslands where sunlight and water are moderately available.
Elsewhere
than in Nepal, Ligustrum indicum is found in much of the Indian subcontinent,
particularly in northeast India, Bhutan, and southern China. It is also
cultivated as an ornamental bush in certain regions due to its stunning leaves
and fragrant flowers. It is also mistaken for other similar species within the
Ligustrum genus, referred to as privet, that are found in India and used both
in traditional medicine and in agriculture.
Due to its
