    Introduction

Kukur Thotne, also called Smart Weed or Chinese knotweed, is a climbing herb in the buckwheat family. It’s known in Nepali as कुकुर ठोट्ने. The plant grows tall—sometimes reaching 3–5 feet (1–1.5meters)—with white to pale pink flower clusters. Its small round edible berries taste slightly sweet and sour.

Availability in Nepal and Other Countries

    • Nepal: It grows wild in mountain forests and hillsides between 1,200–2,500 meters. People in Nepal’s Tamang community use it traditionally.
    • Other countries: It’s found in Bhutan, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Myanmar, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, and Papua New Guinea.

    Physical Properties

    1. Type: Perennial climber (a plant that lives for several years and climbs on other plants).
    2. Height: Usually 2–3m (6–10ft) but may grow shorter if not supported.
    3. Stem/Leaves:
      • Stems: Smooth, reddish-brown with stripes.
      • Leaves: Oval, 4–8cm long, with pointed ends and heart-shaped base.
    4. Flowers & Fruits:
      • Flowers: Bunches (5–7 cm) of tiny white or pinkish blooms.
      • Fruits: Globose berries, enclosed in fleshy cups (calyx), turning bluish-black when ripe.
    5. Taste / Chemical makeup: Bitter, astringent, pungent. Contains tannins, “polygonic acid,” vitamin K, flavonoids, phenolic compounds.

    Medicinal Properties

    1. Bleeding & Wounds: Contains vitamin K and tannins that help clot blood and stop bleeding (e.g. nosebleed, hemorrhoids, excessive menstrual bleeding).
    2. Digestive Issues: Used traditionally to treat diarrhea, dysentery, colitis, intestinal worms, and stomach pain
    3. Liver Protection: Studies in rats show liver-protective effects (lowers liver enzymes, boosts antioxidants).
    4. Anti-inflammatory: Used to treat arthritis, muscle cramps, fevers, and scorpion or snake bites. Research confirms anti-inflammatory properties in lab and animal tests.
    5. Antimicrobial & Anti-viral: Leaf extracts help fight worms, bacteria, and influenza in lab studies.
    6. Antioxidant / Anti-cancer potential: High phenolic content with antioxidant activity; early research shows promise in cancer-prevention studies.

    Advantages (Why it's useful)

    • Natural remedy: A multi‑purpose herb to treat bleeding, digestion, inflammation, fever, and infections with fewer side effects than synthetic drugs.
    • Wild herb: Easy to find and inexpensive.

    1. When to harvest: During growing season when leaves and flowers are abundant.
    2. Parts to collect: Entire above-ground parts (stems, leaves, flowers).
    3. How to harvest: Use clean shears, cut stems near base.
    4. Drying:
      • Clean by rinsing and air-drying.
      • Dry in shade or low heat until stems snap easily.
      • Drying removes volatile compounds (like polygonic acid).
    5. Storage:
      • Store dried herb in airtight, light-safe containers.
      • For juices or teas: use fresh or store cooled extract briefly in fridge.
    6. Preserving berries: Can be eaten fresh or made into jams or tinctures.

    Safety & Side Effects

    • Generally safe in traditional doses.
    • Vitamin K content may interfere with blood-thinners (e.g. warfarin).
    • Gastric irritation: May worsen ulcers or sensitive stomachs.
    • Skin contact: Fresh plant may cause skin irritation or swelling.
    • Pregnancy/breastfeeding: Not enough safety info—better avoid.
