    Introduction

Red Gaikhure, locally known as रातो गाईखुरेगानो or रक्तलक्ष्मीकन्द, is a rare medicinal herb traditionally used in Himalayan herbal medicine. Scientifically known as Drynaria quercifolia, it is a type of epiphytic fern that grows on trees or rocks in tropical and subtropical forests.

This herb has been valued for centuries in traditional systems such as Ayurveda and Chinese medicine. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is often called “bone mender” because of its strong ability to help heal bones and strengthen joints.

The plant is known for its sweet taste and calming nature. It is traditionally used to improve eyesight, reduce pain, increase hemoglobin, and help with different blood-related disorders. In Nepal, herbal practitioners consider Red Gaikhure a powerful tonic for improving overall health and strengthening the body.

    Availability in Nepal and Abroad

Red Gaikhure grows naturally in warm and humid environments. In Nepal, it is mainly found in forest regions up to about 2000 meters altitude, especially in shaded areas where moisture is available.

The plant also grows in many parts of Asia including:

    India

    Sri Lanka

    China

    Bangladesh

    Southeast Asian countries

It often grows on tree trunks, rocks, and old walls because it is an epiphytic fern, meaning it can grow without soil by attaching itself to other surfaces.

Due to its medicinal value, the rhizome (underground stem) is sometimes collected and traded in herbal markets both in Nepal and abroad. However, it is considered relatively rare in some regions because of overharvesting and habitat loss.

    Physical Properties

Red Gaikhure is a medium-sized fern plant that usually grows 3–5 feet tall. It has unique physical characteristics that make it easy to recognize.

    Main physical features include:

Leaves (Fronds): The plant has two types of leaves. One type is broad and shield-like, while the other is long and narrow.

Rhizome (Gano): The underground stem is thick and dark in color. This part is mostly used for medicinal purposes.

Growth Pattern: It grows attached to tree trunks or rocks and spreads slowly.

Color: The rhizome is often dark brown or blackish, while the leaves are green.

The plant collects organic matter such as fallen leaves around its base, which helps it obtain nutrients for growth.

    Medicinal Properties

Red Gaikhure is highly valued in traditional herbal medicine because it contains several beneficial compounds such as flavonoids, phenolic acids, alkaloids, and triterpenoids. These compounds provide antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and healing effects.

    Important medicinal properties include:

Bone healing: Helps repair fractured bones and strengthen joints.

Anti-inflammatory: Reduces swelling and pain in muscles and joints.

Blood purification: Supports treatment of blood disorders.

Pain relief: Works as a natural analgesic.

Antioxidant activity: Protects cells from damage.

Digestive support: Helps improve digestion and clean the stomach.

Research studies also show that extracts of the plant may have antimicrobial and antidiabetic effects.

    Advantages

Using Red Gaikhure as a natural remedy provides several health advantages:

Improves eyesight when fresh green leaves are consumed in small amounts

Increases hemoglobin, helping people with weakness or anemia.

Stops bleeding and helps heal wounds.

Strengthens bones and joints, especially after fractures.

Helps treat blood-related diseases, including serious blood disorders.

    Reduces body pain and inflammation.

Supports kidney health and may help in kidney-related problems.

Because of these benefits, the herb is often considered a natural tonic for overall body strength.

    Traditional Uses

For centuries, Red Gaikhure has been used by traditional healers and local communities for various health problems.

    Some common traditional uses include:

Treatment of bone fractures and joint injuries.

Relief from body pain and swelling.

Treatment of jaundice and digestive disorders.

Improvement of blood circulation and hemoglobin levels.

Treatment of skin diseases and infections.

Tribal communities in South Asia also use its rhizome soup to reduce rheumatic pain and strengthen bones.

In some traditions, the plant is also used to treat cough, headache, fever, and stomach problems.

    Usage Methods & Dosage

Different parts of the plant can be used in various ways depending on the health condition.

    Common preparation methods include:

    1. Powder (Churna)

Dry the rhizome and grind it into powder.

Take 1 teaspoon once or twice daily with warm water or honey.

    2. Decoction (Kadha)

    Boil crushed rhizome in water.

Drink about one cup daily for therapeutic effects.

    3. Extract (Arka)

Take 30–50 grams of extract as recommended by traditional practitioners.

    4. Raw Rhizome Piece

Small pieces of the rhizome can be sucked or chewed 3–5 times daily

    5. Paste Application

A paste made from the rhizome can be applied externally on fractures or swelling.

Traditional herbal dosage should always be taken carefully and preferably under the guidance of a qualified practitioner.

    Harvesting & Preservation

Proper harvesting and storage are important to maintain the medicinal quality of Red Gaikhure.

    Harvesting:

The rhizome is usually collected when the plant is mature.

It is carefully removed without destroying the entire plant to allow regeneration.

    Cleaning:

The rhizome is washed to remove soil and impurities.

    Drying:

It is dried in shade rather than direct sunlight to preserve active compounds.

    Storage:

The dried pieces or powder should be stored in airtight containers in a cool and dry place.

Proper preservation ensures that the herb remains effective for long-term medicinal use.

    Conclusion

Red Gaikhure (Drynaria quercifolia) is a rare and powerful medicinal fern that has been used for centuries in traditional medicine. It grows naturally in forest regions and is known for its ability to heal bones, improve blood health, reduce pain, and strengthen the body.

The herb contains several beneficial compounds that provide anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and healing properties. Because of these qualities, it is widely valued in Ayurveda and traditional herbal practices.

However, due to its rarity and increasing demand, sustainable harvesting and conservation are important to protect this valuable medicinal plant. When used correctly and responsibly, Red Gaikhure can serve as a natural remedy for many health conditions and contribute to overall well-being.
