जेठीमधु, जसलाई अंग्रेजीमा Liquorice भनिन्छ, एक बहुवर्षीय वनस्पति

हो जसको वैज्ञानिक नाम Glycyrrhiza glabra L. हो। यो १ देखि २ मीटरसम्म अग्लो हुने झाडी वर्गको वनस्पति हो। यसको डाँठ बेलनाजस्तो र जमिनमाथि घस्रने खालको हुन्छ। यसको पातहरू संयुक्त, गोलाकार र पहेंलो रंगका हुन्छन् जसको लम्बाई २.५ देखि ५ से.मी.सम्म हुन्छ। फूलहरू प्याजी रंगको हुन्छन् र गुच्छादार रूपमा उभिन्छन्, जसको लम्बाई १५ से.मी. जति हुन्छ।

उपलब्धता

नेपालमा जेठीमधु प्राकृतिक अवस्थामा पाईदैन। हालसम्म यसको व्यवसायिक खेती पनि शुरु गरिएको छैन। भारतमा यसको खेती गरिन्छ र नेपालमा यो भारतबाट ठूलो मात्रामा आयात हुने गर्दछ। यद्यपि भारतमा यसको खेती भइरहेको छ, यो भूमध्यसागरीय र मध्य एसीयाको स्थानिक वनस्पति हो। यसको खेती गरिराख्न उष्ण र उपोष्ण क्षेमा उपयुक्त मानिन्छ।

भाग र संकलन समय

जेठीमधुको मुख्य भाग जसलाई व्यापारमा प्रयोग गरिन्छ, त्यो यसको जरा हो। यसको जरा संकलनको समयमा असोजदेखि कात्तिकसम्म लिइन्छ। जरा बाहिरी रूपमा खस्रो र खैरो हुन्छ र यसको मोटाई १ देखि २ से.मी.सम्म हुन्छ। यसका भित्री भाग रेशादार र पहेंलो रंगका हुन्छन्। यसको स्वाद गुलियो र चपाउँदा पग्लिँदो हुन्छ।

Introduction

Jethimadhu, commonly known as Liquorice in English, is a perennial herb. The scientific name of the plant is Glycyrrhiza glabra L. The plant can grow up to 1 to 2 meters tall with a creeping stem lying on the ground. Leaves are compound, made of 9 to 17 oval yellow leaflets, 2.5-5 cm long. The flowers are purple to pale whitish blue and the inflorescence is loose, with a cluster approximately 15 cm in length.

Availability

Jethimadhu does not occur naturally in Nepal, and commercial propagation has not been started yet. Its import is mainly done from India, though available in Indian fir also it is not native to that country but common for Mediterranean and Central Asian region. It prefers tropical and sub-tropical climate.

Parts and Time of Harvesting

The commercially used part of Jethimadhu is the root. The harvesting time ranges from October to November. The outer part is roughly brown with a 1 to 2 cm thickness of the root. The bark is medium-thick, and internally, the root is fibrous, woody, yellow, with a sweet, melting taste when it is chewed.
