Introduction:
Jatamansi, or Spikenard, is a fragrant perennial herb that
grows from 10 to 60 cm tall. The plant has a stout underground rhizome that is
covered with fibrous stalks of withered leaves. The basal leaves grow in
rosettes close to the ground. Bluish-white flowers are borne between June and
August.
Availabilty:
It has been found to thrive in the high-altitude areas of
Nepal between 3600 to 5000 meters. Its occurrence is reported to be on open,
moist and dry rocky hillsides, on open rocky, stony grasslands, Juniper and
Rhododendron shrublands. Although its presence has been reported in several
high Himalayan districts, it is most abundant in the Karnali region.
Parts Used in Trade:
The main part traded in Jatamansi is its rhizome.
Harvesting Time:
The harvest of Jatamansi is done during the month of October
to November, when the aerial parts of the plant turn yellow and become dry.
Description of Traded Part:
The rhizome of Jatamansi is covered by reddish-brown,
fibrous stalks, about 0.5 to 1 cm thick, and 10-15 cm long. It has a
distinctive odor, which resembles that of animal musk. After extracting the
essential oil from the rhizome, the residual product is marc, which is softer
and less fibrous.
Uses and Properties:
Several medicinal properties make Jatamansi one of the most
valued herbs in traditional medicine. Its main uses are listed below.
Stimulant to the Heart and Respiratory System: Jatamansi
rhizome is used to stimulate the heart and the respiratory system generally,
improving the cardiovascular system.
Microbial Offense: This plant contains antimicrobial
properties that help in effective combating against different types of
microbes. Thus, it improves immune function while treating infections.
Urinary Health: Jatamansi acts as a diuretic; it increases
the quantity of urine, helping to maintain healthy urination and
detoxification.
Culinary Uses: Parts of the world use Jatamansi for food
preparation since it has an aromatic smell.
Production of Essential Oil: The rhizome-derived essential
oil is extensively used in cosmetic and perfumery industries. This oil is also
used as a key ingredient in medicated hair oil preparations to enhance the
health and silkiness of the hair.
Alternative to Valerian: Jatamansi is one of the natural
substitutes for the Valerian herbal extract, recommended for disorders related
to the heart.
Conservation Status:
The Nepalese government banned the export of raw Jatamansi,
although permission by the Department of Forests allows the exportation of
essential oil and extracts that are processed. It is listed under Appendix II
in CITES, which shows that it is vulnerable. For sustainability and
perpetuation, it is very important that conservation be carried out for this
plant to continue to exist in its natural habitat.
Benefits of Jatamansi:
Improves Cardiovascular Health: It will help in regulating
heart functions and reduce stress on the heart if taken regularly. Immunity
increases because the antimicrobial properties help to fight off infections,
hence strengthening the immunity of the body. Promotes Hair Health: Jatamansi
oil, by nourishing the scalp, strengthens hair follicles, promoting healthy
hair growth.
Conclusion:
Jatamansi is important not only in the herbal list of Nepal
but also plays an important role in the cultural heritage and biodiversity
aspects. Its diverse applications-from medicinal value to extraction of
essential oils-showcase its value in traditional practices as well as its significance
in various modern industries. Since there is increased awareness of the
benefits of herbs in Nepal, the conservation of Jatamansi is of continued
importance to both the naturalist and the herbalist.
