    1. Introduction

The banana flower—known in Nepali as Kerako Bungko (केराको बुङ्गो), केदलीपुष्प, or simply the banana blossom/heart in English—emerges before the banana fruit. When the flower first blooms, it develops into a bunch of bananas. This stage yields what we call the “bungko,” a rich, flavorful part of the banana plant revered in Ayurvedic and folk medicine. Traditionally, it's praised for its ability to soothe sore throat, reduce inflammation, boost digestion, and tackle various ailments like wasting diseases (kshay) and bleeding disorders. Modern science confirms its rich nutrient profile—full of fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.

    2. Availability in Nepal and Other Countries

Nepal: Banana flowers are widely available in local markets, particularly during the fruit‑bearing season. They’re sold fresh, especially in the Terai and mid-hill regions, and form a regular part of traditional diets.
Asia (India, Sri Lanka, SE Asia): In countries like India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia, banana blossoms are everyday ingredients—found fresh in markets and canned or frozen for convenience .
Western countries: Less common fresh, but found in Asian grocery stores as canned or frozen products, and specialty health stores often stock supplements.

    3. Physical Properties

    • Appearance: A large, teardrop-shaped, purplish-red cone (“blossom”) that peels to reveal pale, ivory florets.
    • Texture and taste: The florets are fleshy, with mild, slightly sweet, mellow flavor. The outer bracts are fibrous and often discarded.
    • Composition (per 100g):
      • Calories: ~23kcal
      • Carbs ~4g, Protein ~1.5g, negligible fat
      • High fiber (both soluble and insoluble)
      • Rich in minerals: potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, copper
      • Antioxidants: quercetin, catechin, phenols, saponins, tannins

    4. Medicinal Properties

Traditional Nepali and Ayurvedic medicine describe Kerako Bungko as:

    • Sweet yet heavy, used for treating throat inflammation, respiratory issues, wasting diseases, and bleeding disorders .
    • Treats vata–pitta and rakta-pitta imbalances, supports digestion, relieves kidney stones, purifies the stomach, and suppresses hunger .
    • Handles menstrual disorders, excessive bleeding, white discharge, dysentery, cholera .

    Modern research highlights:

    • Digestive health: Fiber content supports gut motility, prevents constipation, and acts as a prebiotic
    • Cholesterol & blood sugar: Antioxidants like quercetin may lower LDL cholesterol and control post-meal blood glucose .
    • Anti-inflammatory & bone support: Antioxidants show anti-inflammatory effects and bone-protective potential in test-tube/animal studies
    • Prostate health: Early studies suggest reduced prostate inflammation and improved urinary flow via anti-inflammatory compounds

    5. Advantages

    • Nutrient-dense: Low-calorie, high-fiber, mineral-rich, protein-complete, packed with antioxidants.
    • Therapeutic potency: Blends multiple health benefits—digestive, metabolic, reproductive, inflammatory support.
    • Versatile: Works in foods, teas, supplements; raw to fully cooked.
    • Accessible: Fresh in tropical countries; canned/frozen globally.

    6. Uses

    Dietary

    • Cooking: Curries (e.g., Kerala mochar ghonto), stir-fries, soups, fritters, salads, chutneys (Nepali seasonal dishes).
    • Vegan substitute: Flaky texture makes it a great fish or crab substitute in vegetarian dishes .

    Medicinal

    • Herbal tea: Steeped for throat inflammation or menstrual relief.
    • Ayurvedic treats: Heals ulcers, dysentery, bronchitis.

    Industrial

    • Generally underused, but other banana parts serve as fibers, pulp, flour, cosmetics, bio‑sorbents .

    7. Using Method

    1. Cleaning: Remove outer bracts, rinse safflower-infused sap to reduce bitterness; soak in lemon-water.
    2. Preparation: Peel layers, collect core and florets. Remove style/stigma.
    3. Cooking: Slice or chop florets; soak and cook in soups, curries, stir-fries; steam or use raw in salads.
    4. Tea: Slice and steep in boiling water; sweeten lightly. Used for throat, menstrual relief.
    5. Supplement: Dried powders or extracts for blood sugar and cholesterol support.

    8. Harvesting and Preservation

    Harvesting

    • Timing: Flowers appear before fruit. For blossoms, harvest entire inflorescence before full fruit cluster development.
    • Careful cutting: Slice carefully from the stalk, leaving some stem to reduce sap leakage; wipe away sap.

    Preservation

    • Fresh: Use quickly (within 3 days). Store unpeeled at room temperature.
    • Acid soak: Submerge sliced parts in lemon/lime water to prevent browning.
    • Canned/frozen: Common availability in specialty markets.
    • Drying: Optionally dehydrate florets or whole blossoms for powders or silica-gel dried botanicals.
